Hananui PurePod
Glass Walls, Wild Views - A Stay That Puts Nature First
Description
Remote. Peaceful. Unforgettable.
The Hananui PurePod is perched on a ridgeline above Lee Bay on Stewart Island/Rakiura, offering sweeping views across native bush and out to the island’s highest peak. Nestled inside a predator-free eco-sanctuary, this secluded glass cabin invites you to experience nature at its wildest and most serene - from kiwi calls at dusk to uninterrupted stargazing after dark in one of the world’s southernmost Dark Sky Sanctuaries.
The Journey
Your PurePod experience begins with either a short 15-minute scenic flight from Invercargill or a 60-minute ferry ride from Bluff. Once on the island, you can walk, bike, or take a taxi the final 4km to the Mamaku Point Conservation Reserve, where your journey continues on foot.
It’s a gentle 350m bush walk through protected forest to reach the pod. As you pass through the predator-proof fence, you’ll be stepping into an untouched natural environment, with signage to guide you in protecting the sanctuary's rare and thriving birdlife.
A Sanctuary of Solitude
From the moment you arrive, the quiet sets in. Native birds provide the only soundtrack. The deck opens to sweeping views over the ocean, and on clear nights, the stars take centre stage. You may even hear kiwi rustling nearby - a reminder of just how remote and special this place is.
Inside, the PurePod is fitted with everything you need for comfort: a luxurious bed positioned for sunrise views, a fully equipped kitchenette with gas hob and BBQ, and a stylish bathroom with a fabulous shower and flush toilet. Thoughtful extras include a telescope, board games, local reference books, and the most comfortable deck chairs we could find.
Explore or Completely Unplug
If you feel like adventuring, Rakiura’s coastline, birdlife, and walking tracks are yours to explore. For something more low-key, settle in on the deck with a glass of wine, breathe in the sea air, and soak up the quiet. There’s no cellphone signal - just the gentle rhythm of the island.
